Interview Thursday – Welcome Samantha Fountain!
What made you want to become an author?
My mother had mentioned to me when I was quite young that she thought I was a great writer. Those few words stuck with me, more like embedded into my being. From that point on when I put a pen to paper I get the warm fuzzies. 🙂
Tell us about your current work in progress.
Right now I’m working on the sequel to THE DARK INTRUDER. It follows my character Charlotte Kane as she unravels a mystery that’s connected to a spirit from the German Reich.
What do you do to cure writer’s block?
I go for a run. I’ve learned to love jogging, actually it’s more like a love/hate relationship…but mostly love. During the spring, summer and fall months I do it outside. During winter, however, I’m stuck inside on the treadmill. I pass my time on that noisy contraption by watching The Vampire Diaries on Netflix ;)— GUILTY PLEASURE.
Are you a plotter or a pantster?
Pantster for sure. Sometimes I will write down ideas, like this is where I need my scene to start and this is where it needs to end and then I let my mind imagination tell me the rest. This is the fun part, the part where I get to read the story for the first time.
Do you have any writing rituals?
No, unless you count drinking hot cocoa every time I write a ritual.
What is your favorite book? What about favorite book to movie adaptation? Least Favorite?
I can’t say a favorite, I enjoy a wide variety. I can say I loved reading Water for Elephants and The Book Thief and enjoyed both of the movies. I also truly enjoyed reading The Da Vinci Code, but I went to that movie with a friend and found myself explaining what was really going on throughout the whole thing…disappointing!
What is the best piece of writing advice you NEVER followed?
Read as much and as often as possible. This is great advise, but I find it can be hard with my schedule 🙁 I usually can get in a 15 minute burst reading session in the bath though.
You’ve started an awesome new site called Writer’s Pitch. Tell us about it.
The literary industry is, what I feel to be, one of the most passionate industries out there.
WriterPitch.com was built on the belief that we’re all in this together and writers and agents alike are looking for their “Perfect Match.”
WriterPitch.com is a website where writers have the ability to have their pitch/pitches read by literary agents. If an agent likes their pitch they can read the first 250 words of the manuscript, which is only viewable by an agent. With the click of a button an agent can request their manuscript.
Why did you decide to start Writer’s Pitch?
I truly love the writing community and want to give hope to all writers dreaming of publication.
You’ve also run Agent Match. What was that like?
Agent Match was a whirlwind. The entries were amazing and I know of several writers that have signed with agents because of it. So I would say I LOVED IT!
The Random Questions….
Chocolate or vanilla?
No fair! I drink Hot Cocoa everyday so I love me some chocolate, but vanilla is so warm and delicious. I refuse to have a concrete answer for this one.
Dinos or dragons?
So impulsively I would say dragons, but at three I had made up my mind to be a paleontologist so I HAVE to go DINOS.
What psychic power would you want?
Um, to see spirits for sure. I’m such a scaredy pants, but yeah that’s the power I choose.
Favorite Disney character?
Burl Ives in Summer Magic 🙂 Pure Nostalgia
Dream vacation?
England and Scotland, my heritage.
Tomatoes: Fruit or veggie?
Fruit, because it’s a fact.
Morning Person or Night owl?
I’m both! What the heck, it’s crazy. You know what I’m not? An afternoon type of gal!
Favorite Book Ever:
Where the Red Fern Grows has stuck with me.
Favorite Movie Ever:
Oh man…I’d have to say Gone with the Wind.
Music Earworm of the Moment:
Because I just watched The Lego Movie with my son I can’t get EVERYTHING IS AWESOME out of my freaking head, thanks for reminding me 😉
Author Bio
Samantha Fountain is a young adult author who focuses most of her energy on the paranormal genre. That’s not to say there isn’t an insane amount of horror, romance, and suspense thrown in for good measure. Her debut novel is a fast paced paranormal tentatively titled, THE DARK INTRUDER. The sequel to The Dark Intruder will be complete mid 2014. The final installment to the Charlotte Kane Trilogy is scheduled for 2015. Also keep an eye out for her twisted, edgy, suspense with a vengeful heroine in the works for 2015. Samantha’s full time job is most enjoyable. She spends her days with her three-and-a-half-year-old, Wallace. Nap and bedtime are Samantha’s allotted time to write…to create worlds both beautiful and mysterious. FYI, Samantha thinks whipped cream should be a table condiment.
