To Read Tuesday – Time Travel, Retellings, and Horror!

These are also three relatively unrelated ones. Anything involving the Tower of London I’ll have to read, so ANNE HAWKSMOOR was a no brainer. OF METAL AND WISHES is a retelling of the Phantom of the Opera, and that just sounded so interesting I put it on the list despite my “meh” attitude toward the actual story of Phantom. (I know, I’m weird. The music is good, but I just never really fell in love with the story at all.) And CREED has been on my list for ages. I keep looking in the local B&N for it, but its never there. I’ll find it eventually!

Anne Hawksmoor: Time in the Tower – K.C. Harry

The life of a pre-teen is hard enough… but the bullies at ANNE HAWKSMOOR’s school make it even worse. Every day, Anne finds herself seeking refuge in the Chicago Public Library, burying herself in her favorite history, science, and math books… distant from all of her peers.

But while on a summer visit to her ancestral home in Greenwich,
England, Anne visits the Tower of London with her cousin Claire…only to find themselves trapped in the year 1548. With a young King Edward and his servant James, Anne and Claire must journey on an epic adventure to find a way home before they are stuck in the 16th century forever.

Note: This is a 3-part series in one book.

Of Metal and Wishes – Sarah Fine

There are whispers of a ghost in the slaughterhouse where sixteen-year-old Wen assists her father in his medical clinic—a ghost who grants wishes to those who need them most. When one of the Noor, men hired as cheap factory labor, humiliates Wen, she makes an impulsive wish of her own, and the Ghost grants it. Brutally.

Guilt-ridden, Wen befriends the Noor, including their outspoken leader, a young man named Melik. At the same time, she is lured by the mystery of the Ghost and learns he has been watching her… for a very long time.

As deadly accidents fuel tensions within the factory, Wen must confront her growing feelings for Melik, who is enraged at the sadistic factory bosses and the prejudice faced by his people at the hand of Wen’s, and her need to appease the Ghost, who is determined to protect her against any threat—real or imagined. She must decide whom she can trust, because as her heart is torn, the factory is exploding around her… and she might go down with it.

Creed – Trisha Leaver & Lindsay Currie

Three went in. Three came out. None even a shadow of who they once were.

When their car breaks down, Dee, her boyfriend Luke, and his brother Mike walk through a winter storm to take refuge in a nearby town called Purity Springs. When they arrive, the emergency sirens are blaring and the small farming town seems abandoned. With no other shelter, they spend the night in an empty house.

But they soon discover that not everything in Purity Springs is as it seems. When the town’s inhabitants suddenly appear the next morning, Dee, Luke, and Mike find themselves at the mercy of the charismatic leader, Elijah Hawkins, who plans to make Dee his new wife. Elijah’s son, Joseph, offers to help them escape . . . but the price of his help may be more than Dee and her friends can bear.
