My Writing Process Blog Tour

My Writing Process Blog Tour

I’ve been asked by a friend and fellow author Anne Blankman to join her in a My Writing Process Blog Tour. As a part of it, I’ll feature two authors who will in turn do their own blog about the writing process.

Make sure you stop by Anne’s website and check out her awesome book, PRISONER OF NIGHT AND FOG. I can’t wait to read it – and you should be excited too!

And now, here are the questions:

1. What am I working on?

Ah, now here’s a loaded question. I’m always working on multiple things. At least until I really make a decision to commit to one thing and finish it. Right now, I’m working on another YA horror/thriller/paranormal. I’ve also got a sequel for SUPERFREAK to work on, a MG “boy book” I’ve been mulling over for a while, and a possible sequel to A WHISPERED DARKNESS I’ve been writing ideas for. Under all that is the secret personal pet project I pull out every once in a while. That one, however, is more for me than anyone else. It will probably never see the light of day.

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I’d like to think that its different because I wrote it, of course! Really, I think its a little different because I dislike gore in my horror. I want to scare people later. That doesn’t make sense, but what I mean is that its creepy when you read it, but later, when you’ve gone to bed, it pops back up in your mind and makes you wonder about the shadowy places under the bed and whether the AC vent really made that curtain sway.

If its fantasy, I want to transport you, to make you believe in the unbelievable.

Why do I write what I do?

I want to share the weird stories in my head. I love that. I love writing them down. I even enjoy reading something I’d forgotten about ages ago. Reading is the best way to open your mind to other ideas and expand your universe. I want everyone to experience that.

How does your writing process work?

Sometimes quick, sometimes slow! I have a tendency to work on many different projects at once until I commit to one in particular. its a problem on occasion, because I want to write both, which never works.

Once I pick, I sit down, try to write for at least an hour a day, and get it all out. If I am writing on a weekend and serious about spending a day on it, I have a tea tray next to me with pot of tea, cream, sugar, and snacks.

I’m also an edit-as-you-go person, so when i reopen the document to work on it, I read through the previous couple pages and then continue. Otherwise, I get lost. Once the initial draft is finished, I go back through and look for all the common things I put too much of – that, its, etc. Then I really edit. Sometimes I read it aloud and the cat stares at me like I’m crazy. Sometimes I think she enjoys it.

Be sure to check out these other ladies on April 24 as they continue the tour!
